Speaking at a WA Local Government Association function, Mr McGowan unveiled Labor’s first major plan since the 2013 election.
‘After years of focusing on the Perth CBD it’s time to start thinking about where most people actually live,’ he said.
‘We need to switch focus from the CBD to the great expanse of Perth’s suburbs.’
‘I want to create more than just places where people happen to live, but places where people want to live, work and play.
‘Families face a lot of stress just getting kids to school and getting to work each day.
‘The stress increases when we’re faced with long journeys to work on congested roads.
‘Creating metro hubs across Perth would mean more people working where they live.’
For Ellenbrook it would, among other things, include improved public transport.
West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti said the plan was all about connecting the hubs or ‘villages’ throughout the metropolitan area.
‘Ellenbrook already has a distinct advantage with a well planned town centre and a strong and vibrant community,’ Ms Saffioti said.
‘What our policy will do is ensure that Ellenbrook is connected to other centres and be well placed to serve the growing region.’
