The bucking horse event will kick off after the 64th annual Bindoon Agricultural Show, which is on earlier in the day at the Chinkabee Complex.

Bindoon Rodeo is now the closest rodeo to Perth after Bullsbrook Rodeo held its last event on New Year’s Eve in 2012.

Organiser Amanda Oversby said she hoped the Bindoon Rodeo would become an official event and part of the point scoring that leads up to Australian Rodeo finals in Queensland.

However, the event has some way to go.

‘Despite heavy rain at the first event last year, 1000 spectators still supported the show, so it was really good for the Bindoon Show,’ she said.

‘It’s a way of extending the show and getting people to come and stay for the party afterwards.

‘We will start small and get bigger and bigger, but with all the support we’ve had from the community and town, it will grow.’

For now, the rodeo holds bulldogging (steer wrestling) and barrel racing events and Ms Oversby said once the demand was there, the event would work up to a full points competition.

Ms Oversby’s father got her involved in the sport as a 13-year-old and now rodeo is being passed down to her two children.

People from all corners of the state are preparing to attend and the local area is home to some of the best riders in the state, Ms Oversby said.

‘We tend to have a lot of practice days as well as getting a lot of the juniors involved, so a lot of the juniors are coming here if they want to learn,’ she said.

At April’s Newman Rodeo, Bindoon’s Laurence Oversby won best all-round cowboy and top steer wrestler, while the best junior cowboy was Trey Gallagher, from Muchea.

Meanwhile, Mick Collins, of Muchea, was best in the rope and tie event and Gingin’s Wade McCarthy was top bareback rider.

Bindoon and Districts Agricultural Show is a full day event, ending at 5pm when the Bindoon Rodeo action kicks off.
