Swan City Mayor Charlie Zannino presided over the citizenship ceremony at the Midland Town Hall.

‘Australia Day is a special day for all Australians to come together and celebrate our community and what we love about the country we call home,’ he said.

‘It’s a particularly momentous occasion for local residents choosing to become Australian citizens who pledge their commitment to our great nation and embrace the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.

‘We are a diverse community, and one which grows more varied with the passing years.

‘Almost 30 per cent of the City of Swan’s population recorded in the 2011 Census were born overseas and many more were born in Australia to migrant parents.

‘We are proud these 51 people from such diverse backgrounds as Kenya, the Philippines, Mauritius and Malaysia have chosen to join us as citizens,’ he said.

‘I congratulate the newest citizens of Swan and on behalf of the local community, wish them well as they end their migrant journey and start their new lives as Australians.

‘I encourage all Australians, whether new or old, by birth or by choice, to join us in celebrating this great nation,’ he added.
