This year’s event was held at Whiteman Park where students used just their compasses, maps and wits to navigate their way through the 3.9km course.
About 980 students from 27 primary and secondary schools as far away as Bunbury and Bakers Hill participated in the event.
WA School Orienteering Championships have been running since 1978 and some of the more enthusiastic participants have gone on to represent Australia in the Junior World Orienteering Championships.

READ NOWJo Anna Maynard (15) from Henley Brook represented Duncraig Senior High School and won the under-15 girls category.
She has won her age group at the WA School Orienteering Championships five years in a row and is one of the eager participants who hope to go to the national competition.
‘I’ve been to the nationals in Tasmania and in Canberra ” I came third in Tasmania for the middle distance competition,’ she said.
‘I’d really like to do well in the nationals and to get on the Australian team – I’ll just go wherever it takes me.’
The champion schools were Oberthur Primary School in Bull Creek and Mercy College in Mirrabooka.
