Pearce MHR welcomes GST re-think

Lucy JarvisThe Advocate

PEARCE MHR Christian Porter has welcomed a Federal Government commitment to overhaul the GST distribution system.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull made a commitment to overhaul the system and establish a percentage guaranteed floor at the West Australian Liberal Party State Conference.

“One of the main reasons I made the move from State to Federal politics was to help instigate changes on important Federal matters such as the GST distribution,” Mr Porter said.

“The Prime Minister has made a commitment of a GST floor so that no State will have to experience the unprecedented drops that WA has had to deal with in recent years.

“To deliver a guaranteed floor for GST is a major win for Pearce and every person in WA.

“It is a courageous decision by the Prime Minister that I know will benefit the lives of everyone in Pearce.”

At the Wanneroo Business Association breakfast on August 17, Mr Porter said he had been “trying to get a better deal for WA” for several years.

Federal WA Liberal politicians claim recent wins included direction given to the Grants Commission after the 2013 election that has saved WA about $900 million over the past three years.

They also claim credit for securing a yearly compensation package for WA of $499 million last year and $490 million this year, and bringing an extra $1.9 billion in GST compensation money to WA since 2013.

Mr Porter said those funds helped build roads, such as the Mitchell Freeway extension to Hester Avenue, Northlink WA, and the Great Eastern Highway – Bilgoman Road to Mundaring project.
