Just one week later she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which then spread to a soft tissue sarcoma.

After a tough year battling the illness, she is now in remission and will again enter the Run for a Reason this Saturday to raise funds for local health charities.

She will walk alongside 10 team members as part of the Cancer Survivors and Private Fighters group doing the 4km walk.

Ms Fusco-Placzec said the event had much more meaning this year.

"Having gone through the shock of being diagnosed, having surgery and undergoing a year's worth of treatment" for me, the event is really important in raising the profile of cancer and what it does," she said.

"I had lots of interaction with the Cancer Council of WA and that was the reason entering; because they helped me so significantly."
