Lisa ThomasThe Advocate

SANDALFORD Winery will host the Vine Runner Christmas Half Marathon this weekend, with more than 500 people expected to take part.

It is the second year the winery has held the event, which takes runners on a 21km course through the vineyards.

For the less seasoned marathon runners there is also a 10km, 5km and 2.5km course, making it suited to all fitness levels.

Sandalford Wines chief executive Grant Brinklow said the event had increased dramatically from last year, with already 500 participants having registered.

He said he expected an additional 200 to sign up in the next week.

“Our marathon is different because there is no road running and the whole course is situated on the property and in the vines,” he said.

“I think it will become an annual tradition, with more and more people taking part.

“It’s Christmas themed and supports Police Legacy, so people can feel good while they are taking part.”

Mr Brinklow said as a venue it was something different, with the event kicking off at 5.30am and finishing by 10.30am.

He said it also brought locals into the Swan Valley.

“It’s a completely different demographic than we have visiting us on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

“We will have a festival-type feel, with some wine tasting, coffee and food after the marathon.

“It’s really exciting for us and we’re looking forward to watching the event grow.”
