Science Week a blast

The week continued with some spectacular outdoor demonstrations, including a liquid nitrogen display, a banana that became a hammer, balloons deflated without popping then miraculously re-inflated and fruit shattered like glass.

However, the crowd favourite was the making of ice-cream in one minute that had students lining up for a taste test.

Friday was Rocket Science on the oval, linking Mentos and Coke fountains to rocket engines.

There was a spectacular reaction, showing the chemicals involved in the engines, followed by the countdown and launch.

Two rockets were also fired in puffs of smoke and the students competed to catch the rockets as they floated gently on parachutes down to earth.

National Science Week ran from August 16 to 24.
