Ms Saffioti held onto West Swan by just under 5 per cent on a two-candidate preferred basis. The seat could have gone either way, with a margin at 4.1 per cent heading into the election.

However, Ms Saffioti managed to stem the swing to the Liberals to 1.7 per cent.

The West Swan MP will now take on the portfolios of planning, finance, government accountability and women’s interests.

‘Planning is an important responsibility and I have witnessed a number of issues that have directly affected the West Swan electorate,’ she said.

‘With Perth’s population set to double by 2056, the Barnett Government has not done enough to adequately plan for WA’s future.’

As an economist, Ms Saffioti worked at the Federal Department of Finance and WA’s Department of Treasury and Finance before becoming former Premier Geoff Gallop’s chief economic advisor.

In her role as shadow minister for government accountability, Ms Saffioti will be responsible for holding the government to account on all of its commitments made during the election campaign.

She said she was also excited to hold the portfolio of women’s interests and represent modern families and women.
