Swan Christian College serving morning cup of coffee to raise money for charities

STUDENTS from Swan Christian College are learning life skills in the classroom and raising money and awareness for charity in a new project.

Year 10 students from the business management and enterprise class have created a small business as part of the curriculum, where they sell coffee to parents and teachers and raise money for charity.

Each morning, students sell coffee, donated by Fiori Coffee, from a cart made by Year 11 metalwork students.

Teacher Simon Bergin said the idea came about as a way to bring real life experiences into the classroom and make the curriculum more enjoyable.

He said it was also about coming together as a school community and supporting organisations and charities.

“It’s been good so far and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the school and parents,” he said.

“Students are given different roles within the business and take care of everything from accounts to the marketing and human resources.

“They’re really enjoying it and the whole idea is to teach them to put others first and the importance of helping other people or organisations.”

The coffee cart will run for the remainder of the school year, with the main goal of supporting as many charities as possible.

Mr Bergin said the project was currently supporting Heart Kids WA.

He said even former students had helped with the project, working as baristas.

“We’re hoping to encourage parents and the wider community to come to the school and support the cause and see what a fantastic job these students have done,” he said.
