The new group is part of the Red Hat Society and, already, the women have enjoyed a purple patch.

In just a few months, the group has doubled in size to more than 20 members, with more wanted.

Established in 1998 in the United States, the Red Hat Society follows the philosophy of Jenny Joseph’s poem Warning, the opening lines of which read: ‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me’.

The group offers friendship and fun after 50.

Sheryl Olsen is the queen of the Ellenbrook Classy Tarts and said the group was an opportunity for women to network and have fun.

‘I’ve lived in Ellenbrook for 10 years and hardly made any friends but I joined Red Hatters and it has been a brilliant network to meet people,’ she said.

The ladies organise regular outings, which they attend in purple outfits with red hats. The next major event will be Ageing Disgracefully on September 24 at Altone Park in Beechboro.
