A QUARTER of the 188 teachers at Ellenbrook Secondary College received nominations for this year’s WA Education Awards people’s choice prize.

Of the more than 2300 nominated across WA, the staff member with the most votes will receive the award at the WA Education Awards 2016 presentation event on November 28.

Ellenbrook teacher Jessica Truman was among those nominated by students, parents and community members for making a difference in the lives of students.

Ms Truman said she loved being in a classroom and seeing the moment when a student grasps a concept they had been struggling with.

“If you can motivate children to want to achieve and show them how they’ve progressed, that’s awesome,” she said.

“I encourage my students to show commitment to doing better and not giving up when they hit obstacles.

“Seeing real improvement in my students’ learning is amazing. I set high standards but I make it easy for them to learn.”

Education Department Deputy Director General David Axworthy said the People’s Choice Award provided an opportunity for people to recognise local school heroes.

“More than 4000 parents, students and community members took the opportunity to thank their school staff by voting in the people’s choice award,” he said.
