Football: Anzac spirit rouses Ellenbrook to 11-point win over Belmont

Adrian HughesThe Advocate

ELLENBROOK Senior Football Club honoured Anzac Day before its home game against Belmont, featuring the Ellenbrook RSL and a pre-game service.

The Ellenbrook RSL sub branch held a service at the start of the league game that included the national anthem, flag raising and sounding of the Last Post, which stirred the passion in both sides.

Both sides attacked the ball at tremendous pace, with Belmont showing why it had won last year’s premiership.

Ellenbrook’s influx of new and younger players showed great maturity and were well supported by established players Lagan Ashby, Mark Norton, Reece Innes and Duncan Rodger.

Leading at half time by just three points, the league side knew it had to dig deep to keep momentum.

Club coach Justin Wood told the team to “show superior resilience” in the second half to “come home with the win”.

The lead changed a number of times in a very exciting last 50 minutes, but Ellenbrook managed to secure the win by 11 points.

Best on ground and Anzac Day medallist was Brad Pleysier.

The result leaves the league side with one win and one loss going into this week’s game against Mosman Park.
