Mr Murray said there were many benefits to taking up the exercise as recreation and a serious mode of transport, and it seems it is catching on. Statistics released by the Department of Transport recently show the number of people riding into the city has increased by 17 per cent this year. That equates to about 12,000 cycle trips every day.
But there remains a feeling that to cycle you need top-of-the-range gear. It’s something Mr Murray was keen to change.
