The online social networking portal that facilitates off-line group meetings around the world was inspired by the way people in New York City came together in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

The website allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest.

‘It’s about bringing people together that otherwise wouldn’t,’ she said.

‘If you’re stuck at home and don’t know people but want to go out, it’s a way to instantly make friends.’

Now Ms Wood has launched her own Meetup group called LIVE the LIFE you LOVE! offering a range of social, musical, arts, business, fitness, relaxation and sporting events.

She said the group already had 900 members, was multi-aged, multi-national and all about community, bringing people together and having fun.

She said while there were nearly 700 various Meetup groups in Perth, hers was different because it was a ‘low or no alcohol group’ and was for singles, couples and families.

‘We have 150 activities with four to five one-off events each week plus a list of repeating events which is unique to this group,’ she said.

‘Other Meetup groups join other events so you get the numbers.

‘We want to be the most active group in Perth.’
