A PERTH company has been added to the WA Industry and Export hall of fame.
MetroCount has manufactured traffic monitoring hardware and software since 1987, building a solid reputation for their recording and analysis of vehicle speeds, the separation between vehicles and a range of other traffic parameters.
They have offices in the UK and US, allowing them to push their products into about 110 countries around the world.
Motorists travelling over vehicle classifier strips on WA roads are almost certainly crossing a MetroCount product. General manager Vern Bastian said their aim was to provide information to traffic engineers who can take action before issues arise.
‘Quite often, road managers respond with treatments after a horrible event,’ he said.
Part of the company’s role is to inform traffic managers so the latter do not have to accumulate statistics of death and carnage.
Despite wanting to keep the community safe, Mr Bastian admitted they were not traffic engineers and did not get involved in the recommendation of road treatments.
‘We inform traffic engineers who might then make decisions about the best way forward,’ he said.
‘It’s our job to connect the specialist to the data stream.’
The company was added to the hall of fame after claiming its fifth Industry and Export gong, backing up wins in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009 with the 2014 Information and Communication Technology Export Award.
‘They’ve got a great judging panel, so when you get it you realise you deserve it,’ Mr Bastian said. ‘You’re up against stiff competition.’
