The Balga resident and Harvey Norman employee has been a part of Centro Warwick shopping centre for just short of 30 years.
‘I started here when it was Vox Adeon, then it changed to Archie Martin Vox and finally Harvey Norman in 2000,’ Mr Mayes said.
‘I’m a people person and I really enjoy what I do.’
After its lease expired, Harvey Norman Warwick closed its doors last week.
Mr Mayes believes he has become an icon of the store because he is happy to go that bit further for his customers.
‘We’re like one big family here, I have people come in and ask for me and some of the customers have become like friends to me,’ he said.
‘Some customers I’ve helped in the past now bring in their kids; we’ve touched each other’s hearts over the years.’
At 65, Mr Mayes doesn’t feel ready to retire and will continue to work for Harvey Norman at its Osborne Park store.
‘I’m sad to leave Warwick but I’m pleased that my job is carrying on because I just love doing it.’
