A WANGARA welding company received $1.25 million from the Federal Government today for a collaborative project with mining companies and researchers.

Jobs and Innovation Minister Michaelia Cash visited Callidus Welding Solutions on July 27 to announce funding for its project to extend the life of critical parts used in mineral processing, which could save the industry millions of dollars.

The collaboration includes mining companies Newcrest Mining, Murrin Murrin Operations and researchers at the CSIRO and Deakin University, which have matched the investment by more than $2.7 million.

“A single shutdown of a plant can cost well over $10 million in lost production time, component parts and of course, impact Australian jobs,” Senator Cash said.

Assistant Science, Jobs and Innovation Minister Zed Seselja said the project demonstrated the sort of problem-solving initiative that the grant is designed to foster.

“Callidus Welding Solutions was one of 13 successful grant recipients out of 70 applications assessed by the CRC Advisory Committee in the fifth round,” he said.
