BOASTING a passion for connecting with people, Joondalup resident Mari James recently celebrated a career milestone.

The Coles Wanneroo employee has marked 30 years working at the store, where she began as a 17-year-old checkout operator and is now in customer service.

“We have a lot of elderly shoppers who come in from the retirement village that is close by, many who regularly go out of their way to come to my checkout just to have a good old yarn,” she said.

Ms James received an award from the supermarket in 2014 for her volunteer work with Wanneroo Lions Club, of which she is the immediate past president.

“I was surprised to win the award because my volunteer work with the Wanneroo Lions Club is something I enjoy doing in my free time, so it was a real honour to be recognised for my contribution,” she said.

“Helping the community where I have lived my whole life is just so rewarding and really gives me a sense of fulfilment.”
