Girrawheen: Art Happenings group to hold first exhibition in Joondalup

Tyler BrownWanneroo Times

A GROUP of 15 artists who meet once a week at the Hainsworth Centre in Girrawheen will hold its first exhibition next month.

Art Happenings group members use a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolour, textiles, wire and clay and recyclable materials, working on individual pieces and collaborating on group projects.

The group evolved from a handful of people who were attending City of Wanneroo community art classes in 2014 facilitated by volunteer professional artist Chris Kennedy.

“We don’t conduct art classes, however, members of the group have a diverse range of skills in a variety of artistic mediums and they share these skills with the other group members,” Ms Kennedy said.

“Several times a year, we also invite professional artists to run workshops for us.

“In 2016, on behalf of the City of Wanneroo, the group completed a series of 16 mosaic panels depicting activities carried out at the Hainsworth community centre and these mosaics were attached to a front wall of the centre.

“In 2017, the group also painted a series of floral murals to decorate a side wall of the Hainsworth Centre.”

The group has been working on various works including acrylic paintings, mixed media, sculpture and textiles since late last year for the showcase.

Happenings 1 will be on display at the Joondalup Art Gallery from March 7 to 17, with an opening night event from 6.30pm on March 7.
