New antenatal clinic fulfils key role

Director of Obstetrics Patty Adams said it provided the space needed to cope with the rapidly growing newborn population.

‘Our specialists and midwives are set to deliver more than 2500 babies in 2012-13,’ she said.

‘These (antenatal) appointments are vital ” they enable us to ensure the pregnancy is progressing as everyone hopes and to address any issues as they arise.

‘Most women attend the clinic three times during their pregnancy for scans and check-ups.

‘Those with more complex pregnancies attend more frequently.’

The $3.5 million facility is located on the ground floor of Specialist Medical Centre East, replacing the former clinic based off Regents Park Road.

It is housed in what used to be the radiology clinic and features 12 consulting rooms and two interview rooms.
