ROADS on the borders of the City of Wanneroo could soon feature large entry statements, with councillors due to consider designs for eight ‘welcome’ signs next week.

Councillors are expected to consider supporting installations for four 4m tall signs and four 3m signs at main entry points, costing $350,000 in total.

The February 23 council briefing agenda said the Reconciliation Action Plan group representatives preferred a design that represents the land and sea with a mix of natural materials – limestone and timber – represented.

“The design meets the specification of a ‘contextual understanding’ of the cultural mix of old and new, the history of Wanneroo, alongside the new or modern development,” it said.

“There was also a desire to depict the natural environment, including the beach and bush. The kangaroo paw has been incorporated into the sign and would be constructed of stainless steel.

“The design intends to be a meaningful image for people who live, work, visit or pass through the City of Wanneroo and convey a positive lasting image.”

To fit in with the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan, Danthonia Designs included the Noongar “Wandjoo” as well as the English “Welcome” and branding.

If approved on March 1, the four larger signs would go on Wanneroo Road at the southern border, Indian Ocean Drive to the north, Joondalup Drive in Neerabup and Gnangara Road in Landsdale.

The smaller signs would be on Marmion Avenue in Tamala Park, Alexander Drive in Koondoola, Ocean Reef Road in Wanneroo and Neaves Road in Mariginiup.
