Ads on freeway in 2014

The State Government is calling for proposals to build eight electronic billboards to be placed on the Mitchell and Kwinana freeways as part of a trial.

Two are proposed to be installed in both directions on the Mitchell Freeway between Hepburn Avenue and Warwick Road.

Transport minister Troy Buswell said Main Roads only chose sites where the billboards would not be at critical driver decision-making points, such as merging sections. Main Roads research showed safety would not be compromised.

‘They determined that with appropriate placement and stringent control of the content of the advertising signs, advertising in road reserves will not cause driver distraction,’ he said.

Revenue raised would fund road safety and traffic congestion projects.

Proposals will be submitted to design, construct, install and operate the billboards at the eight sites.

The trial is proposed for two years, with the option of another five.
