Seven out of 20 contestants made it through the first heat at Hotel Rottnest on January 25.

Anique, of Ocean Reef, said the competition had helped her improve her confidence.

‘Public speaking has always been one of my weak points and I feel I am overcoming it by being in the competition,’ she said.

‘Being able to stand up in front of hundreds and answer a question was a big deal for me.’

Landsdale finalist Melissa said the most rewarding part of the competition was having the opportunity to cook for children at the Princess Margaret Hospital Ronald McDonald House.

Both girls will spend the next several weeks training and preparing for the State final.
