Ashdale Primary School students campaign for fewer cars around Darch school

Staff WriterWanneroo Times

ASHDALE Primary School students designed a sign to reduce cars around the Darch school.

Teacher Ben Kay said students did a Stem (science, technology, engineering, maths) project to reduce car traffic in the area.

“We have installed a permanent sign encouraging the community to walk or cycle as opposed to using cars,” he said. “It’s designed to give everyone a 10-minute commute.”

HERE ARE LETTERS FROM STUDENTS:

Trust kids to travel alone – Riley

OUR school has a problem with road rage.

I’m from that school. I see loads of road rage around the school.

So I think people should walk and ride if they’re close to the school.

I think kids should walk. It would save loads of money so people can use it for food shopping.

Reason 1: At Ashdale we have a sign saying walk if you’re close, ride if you are further away and drive if you’re even further.

Reason 2: Parents need to trust kids that they won’t talk to strangers.

We must do something about this.

Get out of cars, get on your feet for school – Linda

OUR school has too much traffic.

Parents get road rage, angry and frustration when they keep stopping and moving.

I suggest that if you live near the school you should ride your bike or walk to school and it also saves petrol.

By walking to school, you can get exercise, fit and healthy but driving to school, the car gases gets out of the vehicle and it’s bad for the environment.

Plants and trees take years to grow, then car gases can ruin the plants.

You can also do the walking bus, which means an adult comes each day and picks up all the children and walks them to school with no worries because some parents get worried about their kids walking to school because there is no parents with them. But just ask a parent in your street and each day parents can take turn to bring them to school with a walking bus.

Our school has made a sign that suggests that if you live near the school you should walk but if you’re not that far away from school you can ride your bike.

But if you’re really far away, you can use a car.

I believe that this sign will help everyone to come early to school and reduce car traffic.
