Band hits right note to take out rock award

Raksha outperformed 26 other bands to make the August 23 finals and won the $3500 first prize that includes 20 hours of recording studio time.

Amber Scates said she met Josh Green and Conor Lawson through a circus group in Joondalup and they formed a small band about a year ago.

They have since expanded to include Spencer Taylor (Inglewood), Brennan Smith (Huntingdale) and Maddie McEwen (Victoria Park).

‘All six of us have been playing together for about five months,’ Amber said.

‘We are not a specific genre; our music has a lot of variety.

‘It was an original song competition; we played four of our original songs.

‘We had finals the week before where we played four of our other songs.’

The Year 9 student said because the rest of the band members, who are in years 11 and 12, were spread out across Perth, they tended to get together to play once a month, but more often if preparing for competitions and during school holidays.
