THEY were children from diverse backgrounds, but they were indistinguishable in their enjoyment of kicking the footy with WA sports stars.
MacDonald Park in Padbury came alive last week as wide-eyed juniors mixed it with West Coast Eagles players Nic Naitanui, Jeremy McGovern, Will Schofield and Jamie Cripps for the WA Football Commission’s Multicultural Football Gala Day on Monday.
Padbury acted as the hub for the northern district, while Thornlie hosted the central district’s proceedings and Kardinya the south district’s workshops.
More than 1200 students from years 4 to 6 across Perth took part in the gala.
WA Football Commission (WAFC) development officer Adam Cockie, an ex-West Coast player now with WAFL side Subiaco, described football as a “vehicle that encourages community strengthening and inclusion. The WAFC’s multicultural programs are enabling more talent to be identified and giving more opportunities to aspiring young AFL players.”
