Keelan (26) won the Doreen McCartney Notre Dame Nursing Student Mentor Award after dozens of nominations from students who spent time at MercyCare’s residential aged care facility in Wembley.
Having just arrived from Ireland last year, she said the win was a pleasant shock.
‘Our partnership with Notre Dame has been fantastic and the students are exceptional,’ Keelan said.
‘They really enjoyed their placements at our facility and were able to learn a great deal about aged care, so much so that some have even applied for part-time jobs with MercyCare.’
Students spend five weeks on placement, helping with personal care, taking blood pressure and learning about wound care.
MercyCare executive director aged care services Carlo Calogero said Keelan was a devoted and dedicated nurse, who was a wonderful role model.
