Ocean Reef resident and |DonateLife donor co-ordinator Sarah Markham ran a stall at the hospital in the lead-up to DonateLife Week and invited five liver transplant recipients to attend.
Ms Markham said members of the public were ‘just amazed’ after talking to the recipients, while she was in awe of them.
‘They have an aura about them, they are so grateful for everything (and) look at life through different eyes now,’ she said.
One of the recipients, Pauline Key, received her transplant five and a half months ago and has gone from needing to rely on an oxygen tank to running fitness classes.
DonateLife aims to promote awareness of organ and tissue donation and encourages |people to discuss their views with family members.
‘All we want you to do is have a chat. If you don’t want to (register) that’s fine, but you need your family to be aware,’ Ms Markham said. ‘Your family will be the ones we talk to.’
She said the event was already generating positive |results through tissue donation referrals from the hospital.
