The Landsdale Primary School graduate helped co-ordinate many school events, promoted the specialist music program, regularly tended to the school chickens and fundraised through the sale of eggs.

‘We sold the eggs and received money to donate to charity groups and promote better living so people don’t use caged eggs. Our main group that we supported was the Riding for the Disabled Association,’ Cara said.

The 13-year-old was in Margaret River with her family during the Australia Day ceremony and received the unexpected good news from a friend via the internet.

‘One of my friends told me through Skype, she was at the ceremony getting her citizenship,’ she said.

‘It was my birthday a couple of days ago, so I thought it must have been a ‘happy birthday’ message and then I opened it and it was such a surprise.’
