Carramar: Driver fined $400 under new safe passing of cyclist laws

A DRIVER was fined at the weekend under the new safe passing of cyclist laws.

The driver of a Toyota Landcruiser was driving on Joondalup Drive in Carramar on Sunday, December 3.

When police asked why they failed to keep a safe distance while passing the cyclist, the driver said “I was out of order but he abused me for nothing”.

The driver was fined $400 and gained four demerit points.

The laws came into place on November 30.

Laws dictate that drivers must pass a cyclist travelling in the same direction at a safe distance – 1m on roads where the posted speed limit is 60km/h or less or 1.5m on roads where the posted speed limit is more than 60km/h.
