Cr Brett Treby moved an amendment to the administration recommendations at last week’s council meeting to acknowledge the ‘immediate needs’ at the Girrawheen park.

‘The community has been vocal in its view that it remains a forgotten part of the city,’ Cr Treby said.

‘The comments from administration acknowledged the generally poor facilities (of the park) yet provide no material to address the problem.

‘It appears on face, to be critical to respond to the important matters that need to be addressed as a matter of priority.’

The amendments also included the authorisation of a South Ward community reference and sporting group and listed $250,000 in the draft 2014-15 budget to address maintenance matters in the report.

Several councillors voiced their support including South Ward’s Denis Hayden, Nguyet-Anh Truong and Domenic Zapper.

Gayford Way resident Peter Romiti presented a 103-signature petition at the September council meeting for improved sport facilities, lighting, playground equipment, hard court amenity and field maintenance at the park.

‘I noticed kids were using the basketball court and lighting up the court with their own torches’
