City of Wanneroo food truck trial to continue

Laura PondWanneroo Times

A FOOD truck trial is continuing in the City of Wanneroo.

Councillors voted to extend the trial that ran from January to June this year to refine the operating model.

The trial will start in summer and continue to June next year, running across all wards.

A City report presented at the September council meeting said 28 food trucks took part in the trial and it engaged more than 10,000 people through social media, consultation and attendance.

It said food truck operators’ preference was for a volunteer to co-ordinate rosters and promote the initiative at each location, and they sought flexibility regarding the size and location of truck sites.

Highview Park in Alexander Heights was the most successful location of the trial’s model one, while there was “limited success” at Blackmore Park in Girrawheen and Koondoola’s Shelvock Park because of antisocial behaviour and poor attendance.

Model two was most successful at Landsdale’s Warradale Park and Goal Way in Madeley but less so at Neville Park in Wanneroo, Quinns Rocks’ Mintaro Park and Avondale Park in Mindarie.

A survey on the trial garnered 560 responses, of which 98.5 per cent supported food trucks in the City, 79.3 per cent wanted to see it run all year, 45 per cent believed there was sufficient variety, 71 per cent would not have visited the site if not for the trucks and 35 per cent walked to the site.

The report recommended continuing the trial based on the model one framework, where a co-ordinator organises and promotes food trucks in specific locations on set days, to “enable further investigation and resolution of matters related to scalability, locations, trading period, internal management and resourcing, site and infrastructure impacts”.

An updated model will be presented to council in the first half of next year so a new framework could be launched in July.

The trial will run at Goal Way, Warradale, Avondale, Highview and Neville parks, and the City will consider sites at Scenic Park (Wanneroo), Amery Park (Hocking), Brampton and Kingsbridge parks (Butler), Abbeville Park (Mindarie), Gumblossom Reserve (Quinns Rocks), Shorehaven Park (Alkimos) and Oldham Park and Fisherman’s Hollow (Yanchep).
