City of Wanneroo tells motorists to park politely

Staff WriterWanneroo Times

A NORTHERN suburbs council has told motorists to be safe and courteous when parking on suburban streets in a bid to keep footpaths clear.

In a City of Wanneroo statement, Mayor Tracey Roberts said parking on footpaths was illegal, dangerous and inconsiderate of others.

“It is disappointing that the City needs to issue this reminder due to an increase in reports of people parking vehicles and boats across footpaths,” she said.

“Parking on a footpath might seem like a minor transgression, but it can cause major problems for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities or people pushing prams.

“In some cases, when access to footpaths is completely blocked, pedestrians are forced to walk on the road, which can be dangerous.

“I urge drivers to please be considerate of other people and ensure their vehicle is not parked on or over a footpath.”

Mrs Roberts said people could receive a $100 fine for parking on footpaths, with the same penalty applying to other parking breaches.

The statement said when possible, rangers would caution people and give them an opportunity to move their vehicles.

It advised motorists to download a parking fact sheet explaining laws about parking on verges, against the flow of traffic, on median strips and near intersections from www.wanneroo.wa.gov.au.
