Community-minded locals in awards spotlight

Barbara Colson, of Warwick, was nominated for her work establishing and developing six Voice, Interests and Education of Women clubs in WA, run by the Smith Family.

The clubs aim to facilitate a supportive community network for women regardless of age, language, culture or religion. They also provide financial assistance to families to cover the cost of their children’s education.

Joondalup resident Ron Shears has been nominated for his 21-year involvement with martial arts.

Every week, the 78-year-old trains students aged six to 15 in taekwondo and is seen to be a father figure to young people joining the club.

He said working with the students was the most enjoyable and rewarding time of his week, teaching them that age is just a number.

He is also a published author with 21 novels ” six aimed at children.

Community Newspaper Group photographer Jon Hewson was also nominated for a Deborah Kirwan Media Award.

Winners will be announced on Sunday, November 10 at the start of the Seniors Week Festival.
