The State Government has already committed $16 million to the project as an election promise and the council’s contribution is up for discussion at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Centre operator Venues West has sought a council funding commitment so planning for the redevelopment can start.

Work will include extra courts for Joondalup Netball Association, extended rugby surfaces, and extra indoor courts and supporting facilities to accommodate Wanneroo Basketball Association’s possible move from Joondalup Basketball Stadium.

In a report to Tuesday’s council briefing session, officers recommended allocating up to $4 million in the 2015-2016 budget, provided the State Government cover any shortfall above the $20 million project estimate.

However, Mayor Troy Pickard asked officers to prepare an alternative recommendation allocating $1 million in the 2013-2014 budget with the remainder ” to a total of not more than $4 million ” allocated as needed. The Mayor sought another recommendation noting the council’s preference for trading names reflecting their Joondalup location for West Perth Football Club and Wanneroo Basketball Association.

Councillors will consider the recommendations on Tuesday.

In his report, corporate services manager Mike Tidy said the football club did not have its own clubhouse and used Arena Joondalup’s facilities as a tenant.

The club and WA Football Commission had recently commissioned concept plans and costs for an extension to accommodate its needs in two stages.

‘This proposed extension has been costed at approximately $9.98 million; stage I at $7.95 million and stage II at $2.03 million,’ he said.
