The recently announced 2014 Australian Hotels Association (AHA) WA Awards for Excellence recognised top accommodation hotels, pubs, bars, dining and tourism facilities as well as employees in the industry.

Ms Chapman, a 21-year-old Connolly resident, won the Rising Star Award for her work as duty manager for the Hillarys venue.

After starting as a bartender at 18, she was approached for a manager position before her 20th birthday.

She now works in the functions department, running weddings and private functions and sometimes managing the bar and restaurant.

‘I entered the hospitality industry purely for the passion I have of working with people,’ she said.

‘What I enjoy the most is that every day is different.

‘I am hoping to broaden my industry knowledge and work experience overseas next year.’

The Greenwood Hotel won the Sporting Entertainment Venue of the Year.

Manager Janine Baines said the venue, now owned by the Australian Leisure and Hospitality (ALH) Group, had not won the award for many years, since the days of its original owner John Hall.

‘To be placed back into the high regard in which the venue was held then is phenomenal,’ Ms Baines said.

She said they had been fortunate to host quite a few sporting activities throughout the year.

‘We like to think of ourselves as the place to watch large sporting events north of the river,’ she said.
