The 69-year-old said he had been donating whole blood, plasma and platelets since he was 16, first donating at the Canberra Hospital.

“I started because I needed blood products just after I was born to stay alive; that is what my mother told me,” Mr Franklin said.

“I have had a few breaks, but it is great to know we are saving lives with every donation.”

National Blood Donor Week runs from June 12 to 18.
