A DARCH mother and son will share in the Queen’s Baton Relay experience in Wanneroo next Monday.

Delyse ‘Dee’ Clayden and her son Ethan (12) will both be baton bearers in the February 26 leg as the relay travels around Australia in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.

“It’s going to be very special,” she said.

“The fact that we go together, it’s something that we all remain together for a long long time.

“He was really chuffed about getting accepted.

“My husband has bought us a souvenir baton each – that’s one of the memories.”

Mrs Clayden said her husband Roo nominated her for the volunteer work she does with Ashdale Special Families, and she nominated their son for his role caring for a sibling with special needs.

The mother-of-three said the relay would coincide with Roo’s birthday so all the family would take the day off, including daughter Brianna (10) and son James (8).

Mrs Clayden said the group wanted to raise awareness about the needs of siblings to children with special needs.

“Long after the parents are gone, the siblings take over the caring role,” she said.

Mrs Clayden said she spent a lot of time helping her daughter, who has autism, and Ethan, who attends Ashdale Secondary College, always felt the need to perform well.
