Decked out for big day

The former Girrawheen Senior High School student will attend a dawn service followed by a gunfire breakfast on board the Anzac class frigate.

‘We’ll celebrate the day just as if we were back home in Australia,’ he said.

Jason, who joined the navy straight out of high school at the age of 17, said he was inspired to sign on after hearing stories about serving from his older brother.

‘The Navy takes you to places you’d probably never go off your own back; there’s no way I’d ever travel to the Middle East for the fun of it, but some of the culture and places I’ve experienced are unbelievable and a real eye-opener,’ he said.

Jason is an electronics technician, primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing the ship’s fire control system, which he said was basically a large computer system that produces a tactical picture for the operations staff.
