Dan Murphy’s had applied to open an 1100sqm store in the Joondalup Gate retail precinct, near the corner of Joondalup Drive and Ocean Reef Road in Edgewater.

The Commission rejected the application on the grounds it could impact on residential amenity in surrounding areas and there were sufficient liquor outlets in the area.

In its report, the Commission noted there was a Dan Murphy’s store in Currambine, about 6.1km away.

WA Police said in a submission that increased availability of alcohol was ‘likely to have an impact on alcohol-related harm in the local community’.

The submission noted there had been 16 alcohol-related crimes in Edgewater in 2011 and police were called to incidents within 300m of the proposed site 25 times over the same period.

The Police submission requested several conditions be imposed ” if a licence was granted.

The Commission’s report found the conditions requested by police ‘largely mirror’ the harm minimisation policies proposed by Dan Murphy’s.

Dan Murphy’s had not responded to questions asked by a reporter from the Times before this newspaper went to print.
