As contestants for Miss Teen Galaxy Australia and Miss Galaxy Australia, Wanneroo’s Alicia Tavani and Burswood’s Elise Nazzari had to create their own ‘eco beauty’ dress as part of the national final next in Queensland week.

Alicia’s dress is made from garbage bags with a detachable skirt made from recycled plastic bags sourced from friends and family.

She will also wear shoes made from plastic drink bottles. “I got my inspiration from attending Clean Up Australia Day last month and I couldn’t believe how many plastic objects are thrown out everyday,” she said.

Elise said she made her dress from recycled materials that were a “product of cultural consumption”.

“It represents our consumption-based lives and the waste associated with the way we celebrate (Easter egg wrappers) and entertain ourselves (CDs and newspapers),” she said.
