MINDARIE Regional Council will hold a free training course for residents interested in learning more about waste reduction in August.

The Earth Carers course is a five session program including excursions and practical demonstrations, with participants learning how waste local government manages waste, the best ways to dispose of waste, and how to handle organics through worm farming and composting.

Waste education officer Peg Davies said the course provided ideas to reduce and reuse waste.

“It’s easy to just pop things in your bin and think of it as someone else’s problem,” she said.

“With this course though, you can’t help but see the hidden potential of waste.

“You never look at a bin the same way again.”

The course was designed for people who want to make better choices about what they buy and what to do with those items when no longer needed, as well as those who want to make an impact on the wider community.

“We have a network of passionate Earth Carers volunteers who help out at our events and also do some pretty amazing things of their own accord to help minimise waste,” Ms Davies said.

“After completing this course we’ve had Earth Carers go on to collect aluminium coffee pods to turn into jewellery, run waste workshops at their kids’ school, and collect bread tags which they on-sell, raising funds to purchase wheelchairs for the less fortunate.”

Sessions run Wednesday evenings and Saturdays, with each held at a different location, including the City of Wanneroo operations depot in Ashby, Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup, Tamala Park landfill site and Perth City Farm in East Perth.

The course will start on August 7 – register at www.mrc.wa.gov.au.
