Staff WriterWanneroo Times

A FREE training course for people keen to learn about reducing waste will start next month.

Mindarie Regional Council’s Earth Carers course is a five session program including excursions and practical demonstrations.

Participants can learn how waste is managed by their local government, the best ways to dispose of waste, and how to handle organics through worm farming and composting.

Waste education officer Peg Davies said the course was for anyone passionate about reducing their waste and helping others to do the same.

“Once you start learning about how waste is managed, the effects of waste on the environment, and how you can make a real difference, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed but also inspired,” she said.

“Participants will never look at a bin the same way again.”

Participants will learn about some easy ways to reduce and reuse their waste, while also seeing what happens to waste that must be disposed of on a tour of the MRC’s landfill in Tamala Park and its resource recovery facility in Neerabup.

After completing the course, earth carers can help others in the community to reduce and reuse their waste.

“Many people are so moved by our course they’re ready to take action straightaway by volunteering at our events in the community,” Ms Davies said.

“Some also go on to develop their own initiatives like collecting aluminium coffee pods to turn into jewellery or running waste workshops at their kids’ school.”

Starting on March 3, sessions will run on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays, with each held at a different location, including the City of Wanneroo operations depot, Perth City Farm, and OzHarvest.
