Derek Tabarais said he experienced a fall around the home but now felt safer thanks to a checklist released by Stay on Your Feet, which is co-ordinated by the Injury Control Council of WA and supported by the Department of Health.

“It is quite rattling to miss a step and fall,” he said.

“I was just doing what I always do, climbing down a ladder at home.

“Now I always look down and check, I don’t assume.”

The home safety checklist offers ways to identify and remove hazards that could cause a fall.

Stay on Your Feet spokeswoman Emily Anderson said one in three adults aged over 65 fall each year.

“Unfortunately, falls continue to be the leading cause of injuries requiring hospitalisation in Australia,” she said.
