Judges selected the 15-year-old’s $300-winning image ‘You’re Crashing But You’re No Wave’ from a shortlist of 20 entries after more than 70 students took part.
The competition was for City of Joondalup residents or students aged 12 to 18 and asked them to explore the local environment and provide a caption describing what the image meant to them.
‘Living by the ocean isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and that some of our homes are a bit rougher than others,’ Bethany’s caption said.
Lake Joondalup Baptist College student Lillian Hendrie (17) was runner-up, winning $200 for Life Beneath The Obvious, while Ocean Reef Senior High School’s Sophie Lowe (16) and Greenwood College’s Tanya Johnston (15) were tied third for ‘Stick’ing Out and Seagull in Flight winning $150 each. The $150 City of Joondalup staff choice award went to Duncraig Senior High School’s Daniel Kirkham (16) for Inside Out.
Photos were judged on creativity, composition and message.
