The station officer at Joondalup Fire Station followed his father into the service after finishing high school in 1974.
‘My son is a firefighter at Malaga station so that makes three generations,’ he said.
In his almost four decades in the service John has seen many changes to how fires are fought.
‘The biggest change would definitely be the technology, and with that, all the training we do to be able to use it,’ he said.
‘Water bombers, helicopters, thermal imaging ” the way we fight fires these days is so much more precise than it used to be.’
Asked what he will do on Monday morning when he doesn’t have to get up for work, he is unsure.
‘Maybe I’ll mow the lawn,’ he said.
