The Midland Gate Shopping Centre competition is open to all Polytechnic West students and allows them to design, create and exhibit their fashion concepts.

From 60 entries, a judging panel has chosen 10 finalists to develop their designs and have the garments displayed at the shopping centre from May 18 to 31. Students were asked to submit a couture design using a forecasted style trend that features warm tones and raw, distressed materials.

Croeser said she was inspired by archive images she found of Midland railway workshops, including "heavy structured roofs, hard working men and women and never-ending train tracks that criss-crossed for miles".

"I have used a plait technique through the bodice and briefs to reflect the train tracks and I played around with the placement and contrast colour to create a sense of direction," she said.

Shoppers can vote for their favourite designer to win the $1500 prize.
