THE incumbents of two crucial Federal seats are staying on message in the lead-up to Saturday’s election.

Cowan Labor MHR Anne Aly faced off against Pearce Liberal MHR and Attorney-General Christian Porter at Wanneroo Sports and Social Club this week in an ABC broadcast.

Ms Aly holds Cowan by a slim 0.68 per cent and Mr Porter has a 3.36 per cent margin in the once-traditional Liberal seat Pearce.

I haven’t just doorknocked over the last few months. Over the last three years, I’ve had 24,000 interactions on the phone and on the door with people in Cowan and overwhelmingly the biggest issue that people have is wages and jobs.

The fact that our wages have been stagnant for six years, very, very low wage growth and cuts to penalty rates; people are finding it harder to make ends meet.

It doesn’t matter what their socio-demographics are. Cowan is like many electorates, it is a very diverse electorate. And it doesn’t matter whether they are older or younger, if they’ve got kids or they don’t have kids. Overwhelmingly across the board cost of living, wage growth or lack of wage growth, and jobs are the key issues in Cowan.

In this part of the world, there are two big mortgage belts. There’s one that runs from Wanneroo here right up to where I live in Yanchep and one that runs from Wanneroo up east into Ellenbrook and Aveley.

People are very concerned about the value of theirfamily home and what the Labor housing tax, the removal of negative gearing, would do to the value, which all the experts say would cause them to decrease. And we’re in a part of the world where house prices have beenvery soft and going backwards for a long time since the boom.Retirees are very angry about the retiree tax (Labor’s dividend imputation proposal) and I wouldn’t disagree with Anne, I think cost-of-living issues are important.

People would like to see more take-home pay, which is one of the reasons that we determined to embed tax cuts right across the board for everyone.

The best way to give yourself more money is to take home more money that you earn and have less tax.
