Focus shifts to Freo after win

Josh KennedyWanneroo Times

In this state, there is always a lot of hype around the western derby, mainly because of the rivalry between the fans.

Good friends, families and even some marriages are split down the middle over who they support.

But for the players it's business as usual.

We need to focus on the things we think will get the result for us, just as we did last week against Carlton.

After losing to the Western Bulldogs in round one, we analysed areas of our game that we needed to improve on, set to address them against the Blues and the plan fell into place.

After a tight first quarter we were able to chip away and eventually got on top of them.

Our midfield was fantastic, taking control around the stoppages and then giving the forwards plenty of opportunities, which was crucial to an 11-goal win.

The modern game starts in the midfield and Nic Naitanui was awesome in the ruck and was well supported by Scott Lycett, who is emerging with every game.

With the big guys directing the ball into the path of blokes like Matt Priddis, Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff, the forwards were presented with enough opportunities to give us the chance to kick a winning score.

We had great contributions all over the ground and that's what we need every week.

Im sure everyone hears coaches every week talking about an even contribution across the group being the secret to success, and that was the case on Friday night.

The backs were again fantastic, with Jeremy McGovern and Will Schofield, who made a great return to the team, leading the way. Also, some of the young blokes back there, Jackson Nelson, Brad Sheppard and Elliot Yeo, did a terrific job.

The best example of a bloke doing his bit for the team was Matt Rosa.

He hasn't tagged a lot during his career but went to Chris Judd, who was on fire. "Rose" performed a great role for the team which was very important to the win.

We know we will need everyone doing their bit to beat Fremantle next Sunday and we're really looking forward to the test. They have obviously started the season strongly with successive wins, so it's a chance to see how much we have improved.
